Is Everyone Intuitive?
Intro
Our Father who art in heaven hallowed be thy name…
Over and over, the Lord's prayer played like a mantra in my head, covers pulled to my chin, eyes squeezed shut, as my heart pounded through my tiny pj’s. Watching The Exorcist at nine as an energetically open kiddo, plus growing up with a grandfather who was a Southern Baptist minister, really did a number on me. The fear was palpable. What if I get possessed was a thought that plagued my childhood.
I had a spiritually confusing upbringing. A very young, whip-smart, rebellious, single mom with mental health issues took me to new age shops and spiritual fares where our auras were read as we learned of our soul connection through lifetimes. My formative first five years were spent at my grandparent’s house, which continued into the summers of elementary and middle school. Their house (and church) were filled with fire & brimstone, but also pretty easter dresses and the calmness of structure and stability. My mom, well, she did the best she could. Parenting well-resourced is challenging enough, but the cards were stacked against her and me.
In 2024, it’s not so odd to hear about auras, past life, or alternative means of spiritual attainment, but this was the early 80s in Florida. Reagan was president, and the country was full of ‘greed is good’ and trickle-down economics; pull yourself up by the bootstraps mentality. At the same time, Nancy was a professed lover of psychics, so maybe I was in line with the collective consciousness of the time.
But, for my developing mind, I attached new age or alternative spirituality and my abilities with something to feel shame around. So I shut it down. I secretly read horoscopes, which were in every paper, but felt like it was a dirty secret. It wasn’t until I went to Yoga School in 2012 that I saw I wasn’t alone in my alternative views. It was there that my abilities came flooding back.
What is intuition?
Intuition is our innate ability to expand awareness. You just know, you know? Everyone is intuitive. Some folks have more natural ability. Intuition is something that can be taught and honed, and it is a super fun skill that can help you in your life, business, and relationships.
For me, I am naturally gifted, and I am trained and certified in Higher Guidance, which is why I feel confident sharing about intuition. Higher Guidance was like a real-life Hogwarts School where I learned about getting clear guidance, understanding my intuitive language, the importance of ritual, self-knowledge, integrity, and respect.
There is so much vibrancy beyond what you take in with your five senses, and frankly, it’s too much to share in one blog post. But what I know to be true is that where consciousness is going, more and more folks will find it impossible to ignore their intuitive ability. And, with greater levels of ability comes a greater responsibility. It’s easy to assume intuition or greater knowing, later to have it turn out to be your ego or subconscious programming. The mind is tricky. Patterns are sticky. This is one of the reasons why working with someone like me is so supportive on your journey: not only do I help clients with their intuitive development, but I can gently highlight blindspots that act as barriers to their intuitive and overall growth.
Types of Intuition
Everyone has the ability to understand a higher level of awareness due to our subtle, energetic body. This is something for another blog post, but for now, know that you have different energetic receptors that allow you to take in and distill information. The number one thing you can do to get clear guidance is to have a meditation, mindset, and/or stillness practice. Everyone’s mind is busy! Knowing your internal chatter and stilling your internal waters is valuable in all things, but it is necessary when learning to hear, trust, and know your intuitive guidance.
Your clair’s are the language of your intuition. Most folks have one that is easier to access. Some folks have multiple clairs naturally. For me, my clairsentience and claircognizance were bright and easy to access; now, I utilize all the different types.
Let’s check in with you.
Please take a couple of deep breaths and read the descriptions below.
Does one pop out? Do you feel an immediate recognition of one or multiple? Comment below the blog post to let me know. It’s a fascinating journey of discovery, and sharing openly aids in expansion.
Claircognizance
Ever know something without knowing how you know? It's like the information has been dropped into you, comes in through the head, and lands in the gut.
The feeling of I know.
Clairvoyance
The popular kid of the clairs. This is in your inner-sight and sits internally in between your brow. You may experience colors, images, symbols etc, internally.
The feeling of I see.
Clairaudience
Hearing things? Well, this gets a bad rap. Your intuitive hearing can come in with a buzzing, words, songs, phrases, etc. For me, sometimes words pop out of a person's speech, which shows me more is going on. Or, I experience a richer fabric of communication.
The feeling of I hear.
Clairsentience
This one can sometimes be commingled with being an empath. You feel others' energy in your own body and subtle bodies. This is beyond ‘reading’ a person's body language, tone, and facial expression. You are receiving guidance through your body and subtle bodies about another. You don’t need to even be in the same space.
The feeling of I feel.
…
There are a couple more: a clear taste and smell, but this is plenty to play with for now.
Possible Misconceptions
Intuition is quiet and delicate and comes in beyond the thinking mind; it’s sensations, waves, and felt in the subtle senses. You often will get one bit of information, and once you follow that thread, you will get another. How humans normally interact with the world is very different, and learning what true guidance is versus the mind, ego, nervous system patterning or beliefs takes practice.
Here are a couple of things I have seen get mistaken for intuition.
Emotional intelligence
Having emotional intelligence is a game changer, and it involves the ability to understand your emotions and mastery over them, and how to read another person's emotions accurately. This takes self-reflection and knowledge, plus knowledge of how humans function. And while both skills can help get clearer guidance, they are not intuition.
Past trauma - Hypervigilance
When you have a history of trauma, you can quickly ‘read the room,’ sense the needs of others, feel people's energy, and often have a finely tuned nervous system to take in A LOT of information. This started as a means of survival and is very often confused with intuition. And, I suppose, this is heightened awareness; however, learning to tune into your intuitive ability takes you to a more grounded, calm, receptive state. This is the opposite feeling that revved up an on alert feeling of hypervigilance.
Summary
My intuitive practices are so intertwined with my life that they are as integrated as breathing. The fear of possession has left me once I learned the truth of things. And really, the way humans treat each other is so much scarier than some unseen boogie man. If we all take time to breathe every day, get to know ourselves, understand what beliefs we acquired through life, and raise our consciousness so that we can co-create a sweeter world image, how much better would everything be? And, as consciousness rises it will be impossible to deny that you too are intuitive.
